Mariners First and Foremost: 1st Career HR

Wow! Simply wow. Was Safeco Field rockin’ or what on Saturday, June 18th? A great crowd saw the Mariners play in an Interleague series with the NL’s best: the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mariners ace King Felix Hernandez was on the hill. The “King’s Court” was fired up. It felt like a playoff game. The place was buzzing, the fans were into it, Felix was ready to attack the impressive Phillies offense.

And then something really cool happened on top of all of that. Super prospect Dustin Ackley, playing in only his 2nd MLB game, smashed a solo home run to right field. Safeco Field went bonkers. It felt like the Mariners had just won a playoff series. It reminded me of when they swept the Chicago White Sox in the Division Series in 2000 on a squeeze play.

Ackley came out to a curtain call; one for the ages. So it got me thinking about the “firsts” that have already happened this year within the Mariners youth movement. Ackley and Greg Halman each hit their first homers two days apart. Carlos Peguero back in May. And one of my new favorites (but the exception to the youth movement), Adam Kennedy, got his on 4/20.

So here’s something for you, my readers, to retain, use, and impress your friends with when sitting at Safeco Field this summer when the Mariners are making an improbable run at the A.L. West championship!
